How we met

Anton filed charges against Dawn for stalking. But as he listened to her testimony that day in court, he came to understand that her actions were simply a natural manifestation of her deep understanding and passion for his brilliant music… he could not help but fall in love with her…

Ok, that’s a lie, but “how we met” stories can be so boring. Here’s the truth: Dawn was smitten by pictures of a loft for sale in Anton’s building. She called her mom and said, “Mom, I found my new home!” When the day of the open house finally arrived, she was one of the first on the scene. In the parking lot, a friendly resident of the building struck up a conversation. He offered to show her around the neighborhood… and that he did. She didn’t buy the loft, but she did find her new home.

Anagram-a-day

After a few weeks of dating Anton told Dawn that he’d noticed that she had a lot of anagrams in her name... a LOT of anagrams. The following Monday she arrived at work to an email with the subject line “Day 1.” It read:

Dawn Marie Hagen = Whine, ad manager!

(it helps to know here that Dawn is in advertising).

The next day she received a Day 2 anagram: "Ah, dreaming anew." Day 3 followed: "Her enigma: a wand." Every day Dawn went to work, she received an anagram. They were funny, beautiful, topical, surreal and sometimes - usually on Fridays - even a little unkind (hey, letters aren’t always going to arrange themselves with uplifting results).

The images from the anagrams were so compelling that Dawn started responding with a story, a poem or image that the anagram inspired.

Anton sent Dawn 275 anagrams in all - every work day for over a year, up until their wedding day.

You can have a look at them on this anagram page.

The Proposal

One day in December of 2006 Anton told Dawn he had something for her. “It's kind of big,” he said. He presented a large, oddly shaped box with a big red ribbon. “Christmas?” Dawn asked. “Nope.” “Hanukkah?” she asked. “No, not Hanukkah.” Inside the box was a beautiful globe. Dawn was touched, delighted, impressed… and slightly confused (a combination she’d grown accustomed to with Anton). The globe, Anton explained, represented a monthlong trip to anywhere in the world of her choosing. Dawn’s stared at the globe, then at Anton, then back at the globe. Anton explained that in fact it represented something more: a life of seeing and experiencing the world together. "This world is ours, Dawn. Marry me."

Dawn and Anton spent a month in Africa after their wedding.
You can see some photos from their trip here.
